David B. Burks
Senior Analyst, Utility and Telecommunications
David is a four-time winner in The Wall Street Journal’s annual survey of top ranking equity analysts. In May of 2007, he earned the Journal’s “Best on the Street” designation based on the performance of his stock recommendations in the Utility sector. David had previously been recognized by the Journal for his Utility recommendations in both 2002 and 1999. In addition, he was recognized by the Journal for his recommendations in the Telecommunications industry in 1999. David joined the Hilliard Lyons Research Department in 1983. He acted as a liaison between the Research Department, the sales force and our correspondent research sources. In 1991, he became an Analyst. Today, he is a Vice President and Senior Analyst. He holds an MBA and a B.S. in Commerce from the University of Louisville.
Tom Carpenter, CFA
Senior Technology Analyst
Tom joined Hilliard Lyons after two years on Wall Street. He was on the sell-side at CIBC Oppenheimer – where he worked on several initial public offerings – and on the buy-side at Bank of New York. During the course of his Analyst career, Tom has covered technology, telecom, and media and entertainment stocks. Tom is a member of AIMR and the New York Society of Security Analysts, and has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s and TheStreet.com. He holds an MBA from Georgetown University and an undergraduate degree in Finance from the University of Florida.
Ross A. Demmerle
Banks, Thrifts, and Specialty Finance Analyst
Ross joined Hilliard Lyons in October 1999, after working at McDonald Investments Inc. in Cleveland as a Vice President in the Research Department. While at McDonald, he covered Midwest banks and thrifts. His experience at McDonald also included Investment Banking as a member of the Financial Institutions Group. Prior to joining the private sector, Ross was a bank examiner for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Ross holds an MBA from Indiana University and a B.A. in Business Administration from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.
Joel K. Havard
Senior Analyst, Consumer Durable Goods & Services
Joel joined Hilliard Lyons in 2007. He has covered the Consumer Durables sector since 1997, twice making The Wall Street Journal’s “Best on the Street” rankings (in the 2004 and 2007 issues). Joel has been in sell-side research since 1994 with Scott & Stringfellow; Neidiger, Tucker, Bruner; and First Dallas Securities. Joel holds a BBA from the University of Texas at Arlington and Series 7, 63, 86 and 87 licenses. Joel is a former artilleryman, amateur rodeo cowboy and a native of Fort Worth, Texas.
Carol L. Kemple
Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) Analyst
Carol joined the Research Department in 2005 as an Associate Analyst. Her prior experience included time as a Trading Associate in Listed Securities at Hilliard Lyons. She holds the Series 7, 55, 63, 86 and 87 licenses. Carol received her MBA from Indiana University Southeast and her B.S. in Agricultural Economics with a minor in Food and Agribusiness Management from Purdue University. Carol currently follows the REIT Industry.
James O. Lykins
Analyst for Water Utilities, Natural Gas Utilities
Mr. Lykins received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance from the University of Kentucky in 1993 and an MBA from Bellarmine College in 1999. Prior to joining Hilliard Lyons in June of 2000, he worked as a bond trader for J.C. Bradford & Co. in Nashville, Tennessee. Jim follows Natural Gas and Water Utilities, and has been ranked in multiple years for both stock price appreciation and earnings estimates by Starmine, Forbes.com, and The Wall Street Journal.
Alan F. Morel
Portfolio Manager of Hilliard Lyons’ Senbanc Mutual Fund
Alan is also the developer of AQA – Automated Quantitative Analysis – for analyzing manufacturing companies. Before joining Hilliard Lyons in 1975 as a bank analyst, Alan worked as a Legislative Assistant for the National Health Service in England. He served as Second Lieutenant in the Royal Marines. Alan was born in Invergordon, Scotland and attended Harrow School, London and the University of London.
Stephen A. O’Neil, CFA
Analyst for Health Care Services, Medical Devices, Pharmaceuticals, and Specialty Materials
Steve is a three-time “All-Star Analyst” in The Wall Street Journal survey, having won recognition for the performance of his recommendations in the hospital/HMO area, in the drug sector, and in specialty chemicals. Steve joined Hilliard Lyons in 1984 as a financial analyst following regional companies after nine years of working for the B.F. Goodrich Company as a chemical engineer. He is now a Vice President and Senior Analyst, as well as a supervisory analyst. He holds Series 7, 63, 16 (Supervisory Analyst), 86 and 87 licenses. Steve received his MBA, Master of Engineering and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Louisville.

John has previously been ranked as the top REIT analyst by The Wall Street Journal and has been rated as a top 10 equity analyst (number 4 stock picker) by Forbes.com. Before joining Hilliard Lyons in 1997, John served as Vice President, Director of Research and Chief Financial Officer at First Honolulu Securities. He has also been a Mergers and Acquisitions Analyst at Mills Dowling, a senior securities analyst at 13D Research, and a senior securities analyst in the REIT group at Stifel Nicolaus. He holds an MBA in finance and operations management from Syracuse University and a B.S. in business economics from Fordham University.
Jeffrey S. Thomison, CFA
Entertainment and Leisure Industry Analyst
Jeff is a three-time winner in The Wall Street Journal’s annual survey of top-ranking equity analysts. In 2006, he earned the Journal’s “Best on the Street” designation based on the performance of his stock recommendations in the Leisure Goods and Services category. In 2001, he was recognized for his selections in the Recreational Products and Services category. In 1997, he was named an “All-Star Analyst” by the Journal, placing second in the country for his recommendations in the Entertainment industry. His analysis and opinions have been featured in numerous media sources nationwide, including The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today and CBS MarketWatch. Prior to joining Hilliard Lyons in 1990, Jeff was an equity analyst and portfolio manager with Fifth Third Bancorp in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jeff has also followed the Retail industry for Hilliard Lyons. He is a Vice President and a Supervisory Analyst (Series 16). Jeff holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance from the University of Kentucky and graduated with departmental honors.
